Cultivating Emotional Balance for students commencing HSC, VET, University in 2016
It is time to redefine preparation for the demanding HSC year and for tertiary education, high ATAR scores and acceptance into university are just parts of the goal. We need to look beyond high scores and acceptance, to the major adjustment young people have to make to their lives in the HSC year and then on transition to university. Being in the HSC year or at university requires a skilful shuffling of academic expectations with the excitement, pressures, and demands of being treated as an independent young adult- often for the first time. Personal wellbeing, maintained through developing resilience, coping and behavioural strategies as well as an understanding about holistic health (physical, mental and emotional), needs to be as high a priority as academic excellence for students who want to flourish in the HSC year or at university.
Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB) is a 42 hour evidence-based program for developing Emotional Intelligence and balance. CEB includes a psychological component which equips participants with skills to better understand both the beneficial and harmful aspects of emotions as well as triggers to these emotions. The mindfulness component emphasises ways to enhance genuine happiness and reduce habits which create barriers to happiness whilst increasing focus and attention skills.
Accredited Cultivating Emotional Balance teacher Fiona Dimas-Herd will be sharing tools to achieve these aims at the next InspireU CEB Course.
